Establishing daily routines is a great way to successfully strike a work-life balance, as routines allow for set times to prioritize and navigate your daily tasks. As healthcare professionals, it can be difficult to have boundaries between your job and your personal life. However, it’s important to do so in order to function at your highest capacity and give your best to your clients.

Start with a great morning routine:

  • Keep a consistent wake-up time.
  • Resist using electronics immediately. Instead, do some morning stretches and greet the day.
  • Create a list of 3 morning tasks to complete in a specific order. This will allow you to prioritize and also give you a sense of satisfaction when you cross items off that list.
Throughout your workday:
  • Check in with yourself by asking “How am I doing physically? How am I doing emotionally?” These well-checks can give you the space to really acknowledge how you’re dealing with your daily challenges and successes.
  • Give yourself a “stop” time. This can help if you struggle to maintain divisions and boundaries, and allow for attending to social or personal aspects of your life.
At the end of the day:
  • Wind down with relaxing mindfulness techniques, reading, or doing something you love.
  • Reflect on your goals and what you did well that day.
  • Prep for the next day – whether that means setting your coffeemaker, preparing your lunch or setting an alarm for your exercise class. This extra step can help the next day run smoother and help you to prioritize.
  • Prioritize a great night’s sleep by turning off your electronics and having a consistent bedtime.
Remember that if your tank is empty, you can’t be the supportive resource your clients need. Creating daily routines that work for you can build the necessary work-life balance we all search for.
