We hear a lot about being authentic and true to ourselves, especially during Pride Month. So what does it mean to be authentic, and how does authenticity impact our mental health?
The journey toward authenticity is often a lifelong process, with certain time periods requiring more self exploration and flexibility than others. Individuals considered authentic are those who strive to align their actions with their core values and belief systems, with the hope of discovering, and then acting in sync with, their true selves. Being in tune with oneself, understanding what makes you tick and what makes you feel like your best self, are all parts of being authentic. Self awareness is a big part of finding out how to stay true to who you are, at your core.
Authenticity impacts our mental health in a number of ways. Research shows that authenticity helps combat the effects of loneliness, as well as allows people to manage difficulties and be more resilient during emotional and environmental challenges. Staying true to your core beliefs especially in relationships, rather than bending to please others, can help you feel empowered and can also help you to be aware when you’re struggling and may need help.
