Eating Disorders Awareness Week (EDAW) is a crucial time to shed light on one of the most misunderstood and life-threatening mental health conditions. From February 24 – March 2, 2025, this year’s theme, “The Time is Now,” emphasizes the urgency of early intervention, education, and support for those affected.

Eating disorders impact people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds, yet misconceptions often prevent individuals from seeking help. With an estimated 28.8 million Americans experiencing an eating disorder in their lifetime, raising awareness is essential. Despite their prevalence, these illnesses are frequently overlooked due to stigma, lack of understanding, and the mistaken belief that eating disorders only affect a certain demographic. The reality is that anyone can struggle with an eating disorder, regardless of appearance, weight, or background.

Beyond the emotional toll, eating disorders have serious physical consequences and one of the highest mortality rates among mental health conditions. Every 52 minutes, someone loses their life to an eating disorder. However, recovery is possible—especially with early detection and comprehensive treatment. Recognizing warning signs, fostering open conversations, and providing compassionate support can make all the difference.

As behavioral health professionals, we play a key role in breaking the silence and advocating for greater access to treatment. By spreading awareness, challenging stigma, and ensuring individuals have the resources they need, we can help those struggling take the first step toward healing.

If you or someone you know needs support, resources are available. Visit the National Eating Disorders Association for screening tools and treatment options.
