New research from Edith Cowan University (ECU) highlights the powerful role diet plays in both mental health and cognitive decline. The study suggests that dietary choices may influence the risk of depression and Alzheimer’s disease (AD), offering new insights into how nutrition can support brain health.
Depressive symptoms have long been recognized as both a risk factor for AD and a response to early cognitive decline. According to ECU researcher Dr. Samantha Gardener, healthy eating patterns may help counteract the negative effects of depression on AD-related biomarkers—biological molecules in the blood that indicate disease progression. This connection reinforces the idea that what we eat directly affects both our mood and cognitive function.
“Nutritional factors influence brain health through mechanisms like inflammation, oxidative stress, vascular function, and the gut-brain axis,” says Dr. Gardener. “These pathways impact neurotransmitters and neuronal function, ultimately shaping mood and cognition.”
One of the most well-researched diets for brain health is the Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes plant-based foods, healthy fats like olive oil, and moderate red wine consumption. Studies link this diet to lower risks of stroke, depression, cognitive decline, and AD. In contrast, the Western diet—high in processed foods and sugars—has been associated with increased inflammation and a greater decline in brain function.
While observational studies continue to uncover the benefits of diet, Dr. Gardener stresses the need for controlled trials to confirm how specific dietary interventions might prevent or slow AD. With Alzheimer’s cases projected to triple globally by 2050, finding ways to delay onset is critical.
Encouragingly, research suggests that addressing modifiable risk factors—including diet, physical activity, and sleep—could prevent up to 45% of dementia cases worldwide. By prioritizing nutrition and lifestyle changes, we can take proactive steps toward protecting both mental and cognitive health.
